Perimenopausal Makeup: How to Enhance Your Skin Through the Hormonal Transition?

Mar 16, 2026

Perimenopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life that usually begins in the late 30s to mid-40s and can last several years before menopause. During this time, fluctuating hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone, can affect the skin’s texture, hydration, elasticity, and overall appearance.

Many women notice changes such as dryness, increased sensitivity, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, and loss of firmness. These changes can make makeup behave differently than it did in the past. The good news is that with the right techniques and products, makeup can beautifully enhance mature skin and restore a radiant, youthful glow.

As mentioned in a previous article, our skin undergoes many changes once we enter perimenopause. One of the most noticeable is the gradual loss of collagen, which can affect the skin’s firmness and texture. During this stage, choosing the right skincare and makeup products becomes more important than ever.

Many women notice that makeup no longer looks or lasts the way it used to, and that’s completely normal. In fact, this is the moment when the philosophy of “less is more” truly begins to make a difference.

Skin Preparation Is the Secret to Great Makeup

For perimenopausal skin, skincare becomes the most important step before makeup.

Focus on:

• Hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid or peptides
• Moisturizers that support the skin barrier
• Gentle exfoliation to improve texture
• SPF protection to prevent pigmentation

Well-hydrated skin allows makeup to sit more smoothly and prevents products from settling into fine lines.

Choose Lightweight, Skin-Enhancing Foundations

Heavy matte foundations often emphasize texture and lines.

Instead, choose hydrating foundations. tinted moisturizers and light to medium coverage skin tints.

Look for formulas that provide luminosity and skincare benefits.

Application tip:
Use a damp sponge or soft brush to press foundation into the skin rather than dragging it across the surface.

Strategic Concealing Instead of Heavy Coverage

Instead of covering the entire face with thick foundation, use concealer only where needed. Usually you may want to apply it under the eyes, around the nose or on pigmentation or blemishes.

Choose a hydrating concealer that reflects light rather than a dry matte formula.

Cream Products over matte formulas

Powders can sometimes accentuate dryness or fine lines.

Cream products tend to look more natural on mature skin.

Try cream blushes ( so many good ones on the market!), cream bronzers and even liquid highlighters. I won't insist too much on the last one. Remember, less is more!

Placement tip:
Apply blush slightly higher on the cheekbones to lift the face visually.

Soft, Lifting Eye Makeup

The eye area often shows the earliest signs of aging because the skin is very delicate.

Best advise I could offer after being an MUA for 13 years is to use neutral mattes or satins, avoid heavy shimmer on textured eye lids, tightline the lash line instead of thick eyeliner curl lashes to open the eyes.

A lash lift and tint can also beautifully enhance natural lashes and reduce the need for daily mascara.

Define the Brows

We often hear that brows frame your face, but brows naturally thin during perimenopause due to hormonal shifts. To restore balance to the face you can fill sparce areas with fine hair-like strikes, use brow gels (Anastasia Beverly Hills has it all!).

Well-structured brows frame the face and instantly create a more youthful appearance.

Hydrating Lip Products

Hormonal changes can also make lips appear thinner or drier. Choose creamy lipsticks, lip balms with color and lip glosses with nourishing ingredients.

Soft shades such as rose, peach, mauve, and berry tones tend to complement mature skin beautifully.

Beauty evolves with every stage of life. Perimenopause is an opportunity to embrace a more refined, skincare-focused makeup approach that celebrates healthy, glowing skin rather than masking it.

Most importantly, beauty comes from within! I would choose withing beauty over any of these tips every second of every day!
