5 Skincare Mistakes That Are Destroying Your Skin (And How to Fix Them)

Mar 3, 2026

Healthy skin isn’t just about buying expensive products, it’s about using the right products the right way. As a skin care therapist, I often see clients struggling with dryness, acne, sensitivity, or premature aging simply because of common skincare mistakes.

The good news? Most of these mistakes are easy to fix once you understand what your skin actually needs.

Here are five of the most common skincare mistakes that could be damaging your skin and what to do instead.

  1. Over exfoliating your skin. Your skin barrier protects you from bacteria and environmental damage. When it becomes compromised, your skin becomes inflamed and reactive.

When you exfoliate too often with scrubs, acids, or peels, it can lead to a lor of redness, sensitivity, breakouts or your skin gets really dry. These all could be signs that you over do it.

What to do instead? Exfoliate once per week, depending on your skin type. A professional facial treatment can also help remove dead skin cells safely while maintaining your skin’s natural balance.

  1. Using Too Many Products. Social media has created the idea that a 10-step skincare routine is necessary for healthy skin. In reality, layering too many products can overwhelm your skin and cause irritation. I personally think that each and every skin is very different and has different needs, also we all experience a constant change so I won't recommend using same products. We are unique and so is our skin! Clients come in with routines containing multiple acids, retinol, Vitam C, peptides and serums or moisturizers. My advice would be to start small. Les is more!

What to do instead? Have a simple routine and the one that I've seen works best is cleanser, treatment serum, moisturizer and sunscreen. That's all you need!

Professional skin analysis can help determine which ingredients are actually beneficial for your skin type.

  1. Skipping Sunscreen. I've done it myself, I know the idea around it. There is a lot of research about the importance of sunscreen. It is a personal choice to be honest but there is evidence that 80-90% of visible skin aging signs are caused by sun exposure. Wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity and uneven skin tone, they all can be signs that you skin sunscreen.

What to do instead? Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even during winter months. Sunscreen protects your skin and helps preserve the results of professional treatments.

  1. Sleeping With Makeup On. Listen, we all have done it! It is not about judging. After a long day, it’s tempting to skip your evening skincare routine. However, leaving makeup on overnight can clog pores and trap bacteria.

This can lead to breakouts, enlarged pores, dull skin or irritation.

During sleep, your skin goes through a natural repair process, and makeup interferes with this regeneration cycle.

What to do instead? Always remove makeup before bed with a gentle cleanser or double cleansing method using a cloth.

Your skin will look noticeably healthier when it can properly regenerate overnight.

  1. Following Social Media Skincare Trends. While social media can introduce new skincare ideas, not every trend is safe for your skin.

Some viral skincare trends like lemon juice applied directly on your face, baking soda scrubs, DIY chemical peels and so on, these are all methods that damage your skin barrier.

What to do instead? Follow advice from licensed professionals who understand skin physiology and ingredient safety.
